Girl Guides of Canada










In 2010, Girl Guides of Canada will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Because of this, there will be many exciting events and activities planned, and with it countless opportunities to volunteer.

The opportunities fit a wide range of people with different time commitments as well. Openings are available for working regularly with girls in a Unit, or just a few hours helping out at an event. Some examples of volunteering opportunities are:
  • Assisting at special events
  • Helping out at camp
  • Helping to plan out special events
  • Helping the Girld Guides learn new skills
Helping this organization has other benefits as well. Some of these include developing skills in leadership, event planning, advocacy, and communication, international trips, and post-secondary scholarships.

Women's Y/Y des Femmes


The Women's Y is dedicated to strengthening the social and economic roles of women, through a team of committed volunteers, qualified personnel and first-rate programs.

They offer social reinsertion programs for women in difficulty, residential programs for female students and low-income women, leadership programs, legal information clinics and many more.

Volunteers can help out in many areas including tutoring, assistants, lawyers, mentors, peer helpers, event preparation, translation, assisting in food bank distribution and helping with administrative tasks.

Residence Projet Chance

"Education is the key to the future"

Residence Projet Chance is a community based program that addresses the specific needs and concerns of single mothers who are pursuing full time studies. They provide safe, affordable and supportive housing to single mothers between 18 and 30 and their children, as well as providing a variety of services including an after school program, a food bank, parenting workshops, personal development workshops, a "mentoring" program, socio-cultural activites, and a camp program.

Volunteers have an opportunity to be after school homework tutors for children aged 5 - 13, afterschool pick up, support by playing with children and supervising, and participating in special events such as cooking programs, library events etc.

Circle of Support and Accountability


The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is a federal government agency that is responsible for administering terms of sentences of a term of two years or more and for managing institutions, and supervising offenders under conditional release in the community.

Their mission is to contribute to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citiznes, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. Volunteers are drawn to this organization for reasons that include, desires to promote restorative justice, and promoting healing in their community.

Circles of Support and Accountability aims to have safer communities and fewer victims by assisting and holding accountable individuals who have committed sexual offences and are re-entering society so they can lead responsible and productive lives. 4 - 7 volunteers are trained and commit themselves to support and hold accountable a past offender, by meeting regularly and assisting the core member on re-entry challenges. Volunteers are professionally supported and work in conjuction with community agencies, psychologists, parole officers, police and the courts.

My Arabic Story


My Arabic Story is a group dedicated to enhancing understanding of Arabic culture to North American communities through story-telling, first established in 2003.

They collect stories, research, learn, train and produce puppet shows, make storybooks and perform at libraries, at festivals, university frosh and at local coffee houses.

Volunteers are needed to storytell, write, illustrate, organize, research, perform and make puppets, design and plan development. Meetings are in English, although French speakers are in high demand as well.

Refuge Juan Moreno


Refuge Juan Moreno was established in Montreal to provide a safe haven for refugee women and children. It is based on the values of justice, peace, dignity, equality, compassion and tolerance.

Their mission is to welcome and provide shelter for women, children and unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in Canada, from persecution due to gender, race, religion, nationality, political or social affiliation.

Partnering with other local and national refugee organizations, Refuge Juan Moreno helps safeguard human rights of refugee claimants and assist them throughout the refugee determination process.

Volunteering opportunities include evening presence during supper and clean up, assisting
residents in apartment searches, administrative help, transportation, assist with proposal writing and other fundraising activites, child care and activites, basic maintenance and assistance with newsletters and mass mailings.

Contactivity Centre

The Contactivity Centre is a non-profit community centre geared towards active seniors and retired persons. Here, seniors can participate in many different opportunities from music to drawing, tai chi, history, cooking, and dancing.

This organization is always interested in help from volunteers. Just a few examples where volunteers can help with are daily check-in calls, help with grocery shopping, trips to appointments, and friendly visits.

L'Arche Montreal


L'Arche is an organization that creates homes and day programs with people who have developmental and intellectual disabilities. Its mission is to increasingly integrate members into society and ensure their well-being by providing time, space, and friendship. The L'Arche Montreal community encompasses five homes and a day centre/art workshop with over 60 members.

L'Arche Montreal is looking for volunteers to help in the office or with fundraising projects, with transport or food distribution, or to just spend time with members at a home and develop long-term friendships.

Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors


The Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the 50+ community. It offers a variety of classes, including but not limited to computers, art, fitness, aerobics, and languages. Day trips and activities are organized regularly, and Jewish traditions are celebrated. The Centre also provides support services and programs for seniors, such as counselling, specialized group programs, and subsidized meals.

The CSJS is a 6000 member, non-profit volunteer association and is always looking for new people to help in all areas, from administration and event planning to fine arts or food services. There are many different programs to get involved with, and the website offers a full list of potential volunteer roles.

Association sportive et communautaire du Centre-Sud


The Association sportive et communautaire du Centre-Sud is a sports and community centre in downtown Montreal. Home to several youth sports clubs, the ASCCS's facilities include a swimming pool, fitness centre, library, multimedia room, gyms, and more. A wide range of recreational lessons are offered for children and adults throughout the year, from sports, to art and theatre, to cooking. The centre also organizes kids daycamps and other events such as bingo and dance nights for the local community.

The ASCCS is looking for volunteers, especially in the following areas: homework help, sports and community events, athletics training or coaching, and interacting with children and seniors. There is an online form on the website for those interested to fill out.

The Pacific Path Institute is an organization that promotes mediation and conflict resolution to prevent violence in the community. The staff implement educational/training programs for children and adults of all ages and offer mediation services to individuals and groups. Today, students in over 930 schools throughout Quebec have gained conflict resolution skills from the Pacific Path program, and pilot programs are being created in several countries around the world.

Farha Foundation

The Farha Foundation is Quebec's leading fundraising organization for AIDS. They are committed to improving the quality of life for men, women and children living with with the disease HIV.

Their sole mission is to raise money to help AIDS organizations in the province deliver services as well as education and prevention programs.

They organize several major events a year, including Ca Marche, an AIDS walk dedicated to raising awareness and Au Coeur de la Mode, Quebec's largest AIDS fashion charity event.

Volunteers help out in the office, data entry, setting up for events, logistics for events, product distribution, drivers, transportation, welcoming teams, boutique clerks at Au Coeur de la Mode, cashiers and as team leaders.

Griffith McConnel Residence

The Griffith McConnell Residence is a private, not-for-profit, non government residential and long term care facility for the elderly, with close to 250 residents.

Their mission is to provide a safe, comfortable and caring home environment for their residents so they can enjoy a superior quality of life.

Volunteers are needed to join the team to help out with friendly visiting, interacting and participating with activities, word games, boardgames, computers, reading, art, wheelchair transport to and from in house activities, birthday parties, special events and more.

Special Olympics Quebec

"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt" - Special Athlete's Oath

Special Olympics Quebec provides low-cost, quality training programs at the recreational and competition levels in order to facilitate the participation of all people living with an intellectual disability in the province

Their mission is to enrich the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability through sport.

Volunteers play a major role in this organization. Volunteers are neeed to coach, be companions, set up local committees, organize competition or fundraisers, time races or handle finances.

Animal Rescue Network

The Animal Rescue Network is Montreal's largest no-kill organization dedicated to the welfare of abused and abandoned animals.

Their mission is to bring about a day when no unwanted animals are destroyed in shelters or pounds and when every cat and dog can be ensured a happy life in a good home.

They provide sheltering for abused and abandoned cats and dogs, find new permanent homes willing to adopt their cats and dogs, sterilization and advice on how to keep your own animals.

The organization is run by volunteers, who help out by working at the shelter, helping at garage sales, adoption clinics, promotion or administration.
